Our Mad Mad World

Russia Tests Powerful Vacuum Bomb
Wednesday Sep 12 07:14 AEST

Russia says it has tested the world's most powerful vacuum bomb.

"Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon," Alexander Rukshin, deputy head of Russia's armed force chief of staff, told Russia's ORT First Channel television.

"You will now see it in action, the bomb which has no match in the world is being tested at a military site," the report said. It showed a Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber dropping the bomb over a testing ground. A large explosion followed.

A vacuum bomb, or fuel-air explosive, causes widespread devastation. A typical bomb of that type is dropped or fired, the first explosive charge bursts open the container at a predetermined height and disperses the fuel in a cloud that mixes with oxygen. A second charge ignites the cloud, which can engulf objects or buildings.

During my stint in the military, I have read so much about small arms weapons, artillery pieces, rockets, cannons and bombs, all with their consequential devastating effects. But nothing can compare with WMD (weapons of mass destructions) referring to nuclear bombs, and hydrogen bombs which affect and detroy everything in a very wide area, even years after its detonation. Remember the atomic bomb dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Some Japanese still suffer the effect of that holocaust. Of course there are the napalm bomb that set the target on fire, and also the biological and chemical weapons that could cripple or bring debilitating and/or deadly sickness to a large number of people. I have also read about the "smart" bomb which when detonated kills all living things in its target without destroying buidings and structures. And to think that all of these ordnances could be deployed in a very precise and accurate manner by the use of sophisticated computers, sensors and the satellites. It is very horrible to even think that some lunatics will push the button that would destroy mankind.
For as long as there is greed, and personal or national interests to protect, man will always think of killing man. I pray that we all heed the words of JFK. He said,"Mankind should put an end war or war will put an end to mankind."
On another note, this news was certainly published by anti-Russian advocates to discredit them, and portray them as ruthless, stern, and emotion-less people. At this age of post-Cold War, and prestroika, I do not think Russia will pursue this madness. They are more concerned about their economy than their military adventurism. The US is no longer their adversary.
I have met and made friends of many Russian immigrants here in Canada and I regard them highly as friendly, disciplined, and orderly people. They also adhere to universal principles like freedom, respect, honesty, etc. much as any other nationality. I admire them as a people.
I find this news quite difficult to digest.
