Prepare to Be Bored - "In My Corner" by Nelia

  • At school, I'm always waiting for recess.

  • My earliest memory is how close we were as a family.with my grandparents still alive and nobody had gone to college. That was my fondest memory, esp.X'MAS time. Everybody wears new clothes, going to our relatives, ninong and ninangs. Afterwards comparing who got the most money. The day before christmas i loved to stay late with my grandparents making suman, halya an d dinuguan. I have so many happy memories of my childhood but i can't tell everything bec. it would be too long but there's just one thing i want you to know. I was good in climbing trees. Sometimes i sleep on top of the starapple, bec. i like the breeze up there.

  • When i was a child,i wanted to be a successful business woman.

If i wasn't me i'd like to be Barbara Streisand so i can sing my favorite song "Evergeen" without difficulty.

My worst habit is putting things off.

I'm my best at drawing and cooking.

The best lesson my parents taught me isto be humble.habang ang palay daw ay nagkakalaman eto ay yumuyuko.

Five famous people i would like to have met: Barbara Streisand,John F. Kennedy, Mozart,Beethoven and Michael Angelo.

I don't like talking about failure.

My happiest moment was when i passed the board exam. in Med.Tech.(it was very hard).

My secret skill that is no longer a secret .....cooking.

My friends say i am trustworthy and dependable.
  • I'm very bad in doing the budget bec. if i see something that i like i really buy it,if i can afford it.
My biggest regret was that i stopped learning the piano bec. i had no time.

The hardest thing that i have ever done was to accept the death of my loved ones.

My greatest fear is being attacked by a dog esp. a pitbull.

I Often wonder if i'll be able to travel and explore the most beautiful and exotic places in the world. i'd like to learn the diff. cultures and try diff .kinds of food. Luz brought you to the belly dancers in Lebanon,i'd like to take you to paradise.my most cherished dream is to be in an island surrounded by all kinds of exotic plants esp. orchids and exotic birds, and a lot of butterflies. My house is by a stream with a waterfall so that in the afternoon,i can relax in the porch while listening to Mozart and Beethoven. Now are you ready to fall asleep?

Get Up-to-date with the New E-mail Buzzword

Buzzword 'bacn' clogs e-mail arteries
Thursday Aug 23 15:00 AEST
By Shaun DaviesNinemsn

Spam has long been regarded as the primary enemy of e-mail users — but now a new type of meaty menace is clogging up inboxes everywhere.

"Bacn" describes the myriad email alerts that users of social networking websites and other Web 2.0 technologies receive every day.

It is not junk email — bacn includes such items as Facebook notifications, email newsletters, and electronic bill receipts, which are increasingly common as the internet becomes more integrated in people's lives.

And if the internet community's enthusiastic embrace of the term is anything to go by, "I'm reading my bacn" could soon become a ubiquitous office catchphrase.

Reports say bacn was only coined on Sunday, at net culture conference PodCamp Pittsburgh 2. Since then it has spread across blogs at a sizzling rate.

Major technology websites, including Wired and CNET, and respected US broadsheet The Washington Post have flagged bacn's unusual and rapid rise.

Bloggers describe it as "the middle class of email", "e-mail you want, but just not now" and "things you signed up for, but that still feel like clutter in your inbox".

And this may not be the end of the meat-related terms from PodCamp — CNET reports that other terms raised at the conference included "steak" (the email you do want) and FakinBacn (spam posing as bacn).

Luz Q - "In My Corner"

At school I…am good in the sciences and dislike history.I enjoy being with friends admire teachers and professors with high value system .

My earliest memory is….my Dad taking pictures of myself while I pose, dance or make faces and my Mom dressing me up with beautiful dresses which she herself sew.

When I was a child I wanted to be…scientist I am fascinated by the different science apparatus and the heavenly bodies.

If I wasn’t me I’d like to be…an Egyptian Princess or a sexy Lebanese belly dancer

My worst habit is …reading. I cannot sleep without a book or a magazine on top of my headboard which I read before I sleep.

I’m my best in jobs where there is a higher interpersonal component.…

The best lesson my parents taught me …is to be always thankful for all things. They taught us to be honest and live simple life.

Five famous people (living or dead) I would like to have met…
1.Jacqueline Kennedy her regal bearing despite life tragedies mesmerize me
2.Napoleon Bonaparte, for his excellent strategies of winning wars.
3Dan Brown, the author of Da Vinci Code ,so he can personally shed light on the many controversial facts in his novel.
4.Elvis Presley to tell he is my idol and I will be tickled pink if he will serenade me with his love songs.
5.The Blessed Virgin Mary to catch a glimpse of her colourful life with Jesus and to ask her why she can be a very obedient woman.

I don’t like talking about…people’s physical deformities .It pains me no end hearing people laughing at them.

My happiest moment was…being with my family and playing with my apo.

My secret skill (that is now no longer a secret) is…counselling and I am good at that,

Friends say I am…a PEARL , passionate, emphatic, ambitious ,and loyal

I’m very bad at…the kitchen , cooking is not my cup of tea

My biggest regret was…I did not pursue a dream…a crazy one, that is working as curator in a museum.

The hardest thing I have ever done was…speaking my mind and being brutally confrontational that sometimes, I hurt feelings of people.

My greatest fear is…REJECTION

I often wonder…how it feels to be a goldfish in an aquarium, being watched and providing joy to spectators

A Special Blogger

Juanito has given us a a wonderful trip back in time to when everything was relatively simple yet absolute fun. The things that we took for granted are now precious memories. For reminding us of them, we thank him most profoundly.

Juanito is married to Jean and they have three children with names all starting with J. He has not indicated how many (if any) grandchildren he has. He may be able to advise our batchmates who are interested in having internet connection.

We are looking forward to reading more posts from him.

Awit muna: Penpen de Serapen, de kutsilyo, de almasen. How how the carabao batuten...

Just wanted to share this message that was forwarded to me by a friend. I'm sure that you can all relate to this . . . :)

LIFE LIST

This piece is from Bethea Jenner. The idea of preparing a life list is for us to be able to "live life to the fullest"

A life list is a list of all the things you would like to do before you die.It is a great tool for helping you get more out of each day and adding zest to your life. This could range from the very simple to the very ambitious but which personally appeal to you.

Put your list in writing so you can monitor what you have accomplished.Categorize your list from simple and easily achievable to more complex ones that may take more time. The list may also include ambitious goals like, "becoming a full time entrepreneur", silly or crazy ones like "dancing in the rain,"fun ones like "going on a road trip," self improvement like "getting organized or losing weight".It could be learning a new skill or doing good.Make your goals specific too, instead of writing "to be calmer",write counting 1-10 and breathing deeply whenever you are about to lose temper.Remember to list doable goals;be realistic .To say,"walk on the moon" isn't realistic, unless you are a multi-millionaire and can buy a space trip,or you become an austronaut in training.Be flexible too,you may change your goal or can add more to the list whenever you want.

I already got a life list and from it many had been accomplished at this point, like riding the Gondola in Venice, experiencing how it feels to be up in the mountains filled with snow and seeing ruins left by wars.I hope one crazy goal I still need to pursue is riding in a hot air ballon.

So batchmates, get a life list now or update yours and see how many percent have been achieved!

PERKS OF BEING OVER 50

This is something in line with Nelia's article about retirement:

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.
2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.
3. No one expects you to run--anywhere.
4. People call at 9 pm and ask, " Did I wake you?"
5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.
7. Things you buy now won't wear out.
8. You can eat dinner at 4 pm.
9. You can live without sex but not your glasses.
10. You enjoy hearing about other people's operations.
11. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.
12. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge.
13. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into
the room.
14. You sing along with elevator music.
15. Your eyes won't get much worse.
16. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off.
17. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service.
18. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.
19. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.
20. You can't remember who sent you this list.

GRANDMA'S HANDS

This is one of the nicest stories I have seen. Makes you want to take a peek at your own hands.

"Grandma's Hands

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her hand looked at me and smiled. " Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking" she said in a clear strong voice. "I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,” I explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands? " she asked. I mean really looked at your hands? I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story: "Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well through out your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.

They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse. They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life.

But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when He leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ."

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband, I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I too, want to touch the face of God and feel his hands upon my face. "

SAMUT-SARI

Hi to Class/Batchmates up there and down under,

I was amused by the different write ups youve got here in our blog.It is a stormy and rainy day today but your thoughts and ideas on the different subjects and issues really brighten and make up my day. Let me join you in tackling the various concerns ok?
First of all,Happy Birthday to all the August celebrators....May the peace of our Lord be with you throughout your life.

On the subject of growing old,..yes I do agree with you pareng Mike ,kalabaw lang tumatanda pero ang puso at damdamin ng tao dapat laging bumabata...Mabuti na raw ang tumandang may pinagkatandaan kaysa sa batang parang walang pinagaralan..So let us grow old and beautiful in the eyes of the Lord after all ...Wrinkles lang yan...cream lang ang katapat niyan.Gray hair lang yan....laging may hair dye sa botika ,iba-iba pa ang kulay...Forgetfullness lang yan ..normal biological process, ang mahirap kalimutan agad tayo ng ating kapwa at ni Lord.

Re-kumare and kumpare..We teachers used to make our class learn the meaning of words by analyzing it through affixes and rootwords. The prefix CO means with or together with while the rootwords mare or pare means mother/father. These affixes and rootwords being used in the modern languages such as English and Spanish are derived from the ancient Latin Greek and Hebrew languages. In the country, being sponsors or witnessess to religious ceremonies like baptism and wedding makes you a kumare or kumpare of the parents and the ninong/ninang of the child or the bride and groom. In this Christian nation specifically the catholics being kumare and kumpare means you are with or together with the parents in seeing the child grows as a good christian and the married couple to start and lead a christian family.

Re-Bansag..I have come to realize that bansag is being given to people during our time because children were given the same name and so the need for their identity. Look ..in San Vicente alone we have Boy Kornel, Boy Bisaya, Boy Alang -then, Fredong palaka, Fredong OIC, Fred darapa, Fred sigabo,- Belen ago, Belen mario-Babyng palaka Babyng amado-Remyng aida, Remyng putol-Mariang ado, Mariang telebok. Others are C armen dikit, Erning sanidad, Bertang bingi , Emman patko, Dr Baba, Charing hilot, Inggong tsapong Inggong ilokano, Max llamado , boy bato and of course my mother was known in the town as Chayong baka di ba?

Ngayon ko lang naintindihan kung bakit lately parents are giving their children unusual names such as Jed, Jares Xerxes Zhasmin etc. .para siguro maiwasan ang mabigyan ng bansag. Warning therefore ,if you go to San Vicente siguraduhin ninyong si emmang fred ang hinahanap ninyo at hindi si emmang ado o emmang guding .

Well, this is to inform you that Fely R. Julie and yours truly are now on our leave as a prelude to our retirement few months from now..See you all in 2010

WARNING ABOUT E-GREETING CARDS

Consumers warned about e-greeting card
Thursday Aug 2 10:40 AEST

Victoria's (Australia) consumer watchdog advises anyone receiving an unnamed e-greeting card in their email inbox to delete it immediately.

Consumer Affairs Victoria detected a scam this week during its routine scanning of the internet.
Consumer Affairs Minister Daniel Andrews said the fake greeting card emails were the latest version of a phishing scam favoured by online fraudsters.

Phishing scams are criminal attempts to steal bank or credit card account details or other personal information from consumers," Mr Andrews said.

"This particular version of the phishing scam is an email that claims the recipient has been sent an e-greeting card by an unnamed friend or family member," he said. The email comes with a subject line that says "you have received a greeting card" or "you have received a postcard from a family member".

The recipient is then instructed to view the e-greeting card by clicking on a link. "By clicking on that link, computer users may be allowing a spyware program into their computer which can track and count their keystrokes while they type," Mr Andrews said.

"The information collected from the spyware can be used by others to commit credit card and/or identity fraud.

"If you receive this email, or any that seem dubious, delete it immediately without opening it."

"health * STAVING OFF ALZHEIMER'S

Source:The All New KERYGMA. September, 2004. page 7.

With the recent death of former US President Ronald Reagan, Alzheimer's disease has again come to the fore. In spite of research, there has still been no known cure or proven way to prevent the disease.

However, studies suggest that increased intake of vitamin E reduces a person's risk of developing the illness. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which may help protect nerve cells from damage or may improve the function of nerve cells. Although Vitamin E does not delay memory loss, it has been found to prolong a person's capacity to do everyday activities.

Limited evidence has also been found that staying mentally active may put older adults at less risk. Reading regularly, playing cards and games, doing crosswords, watching TV, etc. can help in avoiding symptoms of Alzheimer's.

Other substances that may prevent the disease include:
* Increased intake of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 for people with elevated homocysteine levels.

* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as indomethacin, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium or aspirin.

* Statins used to lower cholesterol.

CAUTION: Please consult your doctor before taking medicines, vitamins or food supplements.

Summer fun

SUMMER TIME AT THE JERSEY SHORE

Like most places of white sandy shore, summer is the busiest season in Ocean County. Unofficially, summer begins here on Memorial Day weekend in May and ends on Labor Day weekend in September. There are hundreds of vehicles coming and going throughout the mid-Atlantic beach resorts fondly called, the “Jersey shore”. This county’s beach line stretches for miles and miles for about 30 (+) miles. The school is out and the beach season begins. It is vacation time for most working class. Reunions, beach volleyball, kite flying, walking, biking, sunbathing, crabbing and fishing; all of these fun activities concentrate on or around the coastlines of the Atlantic ocean. From Point Pleasant to the north, down to Long Beach Island to the south, no one can visit the beach area without mentioning the boardwalk. It is usually made of (wooden) boards primarily as a beach walkway. For these two are intertwined no matter where you go. Only a couple of towns do not have the boardwalk next to the beach. The legendary boardwalk of Atlantic City, where the Miss America beauty pageant started, immortalizes this landmark.

Fuel cost is relatively cheap compared with the neighboring states of New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. So out of town folks travel via car, train, motorcycle, bus or even by boat just to get away, and head towards the Jersey shore. Population increases many times over during summer. The two neighboring counties down south, Atlantic and Cape May counties, fare no better when it comes to the influx of beach lovers during the season. The volume of traffic is enormous even in the “back roads.” Going home from work on a typical Friday afternoon usually takes 20 – 25 minute commute. Unfortunately, this is not the case during this time of the year. It takes anywhere from 45 minutes up to one hour during the summer months. So much movement is going on; in that anyone can sense that tourism industry is thriving at is best. It is a way of life, in our neck of the woods. Soon, Labor Day weekend will be here, and fall will follow. Slowly, Ocean County will return to its normalcy. But for now, surf’s up. It is summer time down the Jersey shore... Cheers!

Note: While I have the pleasure of writing about summer life in our county, I have no vested interest or hidden agenda in any beach property, fuel industry or bureau of tourism. I wrote this article along with the photo shoots for the sole purpose of sharing it with all our fellow bloggers. And of course, I’ve had numerous pleasure walks while working with my digital. My wish is that in a small way, I’ve encouraged our global friends to share their wealth of beautiful sceneries (love them beaches, enormous bays, great mountains and parks) as seen through their own camera lens. AAA (Auto Assoc. of America) and Atlas reference books showed me great beaches, magnificent lakes, bays, and just spectacular sceneries from places like: Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls (Horseshoe Falls, Canada side). Maryland has the Inner Harbor of Baltimore and Chesapeake Bay, the sail boat haven of Annapolis. They are magnificent. And how about Malibu beach of Southern California, along with San Gabriel Mountains (Cucamonga Wilderness/Day Canyon)) or the San Francisco Bay, up north? I am hoping that we can share some of the spectacular sceneries from the Philippines, especially from the neighbor islands of Luzon. Let’s not forget our friends from the land down under. Sydney is a given - the largest, the oldest and the best-known city in Australia. “This most enduring icon also has the Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a. k. a. The Coathanger”. But I’ve read an article or two about the Sunshine State and its great shorelines of Brisbane, some 44 mile-stretch of white sands along the Pacific and Gold Coast highways. My reference quoted this place as “Australia’s most popular holiday destination, the Gold Coast also known as Surfer’s Paradise.” I wonder who can validate this information for us without hooking up directly through the world wide web (www) via hyper text transfer protocol (http)? Let’s wait and see if we have any takers, dear friends!

A must -read for midlifers and above

On my 50th birthday, our only daughter, gifted me with a copy of the book : COMING TO TERMS. For the past nine years or so, I read the book over and over again, and thought I should tell you about it, so you'll also feel the contentment that I feel after reading it.

It is a compilation of writings on midlife by 15 women, namely: Bernardita A. Azurin, Florina F. Castillo, Gemma Guerrero Cruz, Neni Sta. Romana-Cruz, Chic Fortich, Mariel N. Francisco, Judette A. Gallares,r.c., Margarita Go Singco-Holmes, Marra PL. Lanot, Carolina S. Malay, Asuncion David Maramba, Imelda M. Nicolas, Alice A. Panares, Ma. Agnes O. Prieto, and Tessie Tomas.

The foreword was done by my favorite PDI columnist, Conrado de Quiroz. I quote: " Among the paradoxes of life that they reveal: It is the worst time of all, it is the best time of all. It is a time of panic, of seeing the beginning of the end, of looking back and wondering if all that one was amounted to a hill of beans. But it is also a time of learning, of standing at the threshold of new things, of wondering if looking back and finding oneself wanting is not the most stupid thing to do. It is a time of finding old answers to new questions. It is a time of asking new questions to old answers.

It is a time of death, it is a time of life..."

The book was edited by no other than Ms. Lorna Kalaw-Tirol. Says she: ...I wanted other women to know that midlife is not a dead end, that it need not be the crisis that it is to many of us, that it can in fact be the best time of our lives."
