to send one simple birthday wish
to last the whole year through...
So we are wishing happy moments,
days when dreams come true,
and a year that's filled with all the things
that mean the most to all of you.

2 nd day of Melings's surgery

Hello again,

As promised, here's another update on Melings's surgery.By the way 4 arteries were bypassed.I went to the hospital before I went to work but Meling just fell asleep so I didn't have a chance to talk to him.Fely was not there yet bec her nephew who's supposed to take her to the hosp. had a car accident on their way home from the hospital last Sunday. The car was totalled but luckily they only had bruises, nothing serious,he was with his mom(Meling's cousin). So he drove Fely to the hospital on a rental car earlier today .Fortunately one of Fely's friend is lending her one of their cars ,so that worked out good.

On my way home from work,i came by the hosp.I wasn't able to talk to Meling bec. he just fell asleep.Fely told me that he is very restless probably bec. of the effect of the anaesthesia. He is undergoing dialysis right now bec. his kidney is not functioning very well. But they will stop it in the morning and hopefully the kidney will start functioning.Other than that everything is ok.He's breathing on his own and all the tubings were taken out.His complain is being so tired from lying down,he's not used to it,gusto nang bumangon.

I will give you an update again for any developements on Meling's condition.Fely told me again to express her thanks to all of you who tirelessly and continuously praying for Meling's speedy recovery.

Update on Meling's successful bypass surgery

Hello everyone, greetings from Alta Loma Ca.I know that everybody is eager to know the outcome of Meling's bypass surgery. But first of all,Fely would like to extend her most sincere thanks for all the prayers that you have offered to Meling and also for her. This is another trying moment in one of our dear classmates. But somehow because of our strong faith, hope and trust in God we manage to pull through this most difficult times.

The surgery started at 6 am this morning comprised of the best surgical team in San Antonio Community hospital. We have learned that the heart surgeon is the best in the hospital, his cardiologist is one of the best and also the anaesthesiologist. So, that was a big comfort for Fely and the rest of the family. Not to mention that this hospital is also one of the best in the area including the staff.I talked to Fely at 11 am but the surgery was still going on.She had an update though from one of the OR nurses that everything was going well.At 4 pm I called Fely again and by that time they had just brought Melingback from surgery. She told me that everything was ok but she did not stay for a long time in the room since she was scared he will catch some infection. As expected so many tubings were hanging and he was well covered but was not awake yet. There is a nurse by his side for the whole 24 hours and in the 2nd day there will be 2 nurses, one to help help him get up.So,we can imagine that he is well taken cared of.According to the doctor,he can go home after 7 days and after that he will be going for therapy. So,let's continue to pray for his speedy recovery and hope that there will be no complications.

This is all for now,I'll give you more updates as the days progress.

I love you all.

The Fallacious Proof:

See if you can figure out in which step the fallacy lies. When you think you've figured it out, click on that step and the computer will tell you whether you are correct or not, and will give an additional explanation of why that step is or isn't valid.

Oh, My Aching Knees

This topic was published by Elizabeth Goodman in the Parade, the supplemental magazine of the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper.

Each year, Americans log roughly19 million visits to ortophedic surgeon due to knee discomport. That weight-bearing joint is the source of so many problems because it is the one most frequently affected by denerative disease including osteoarthritis-the painful condition that occurs when the cartilage in the knee wears away and the bones scrape against one another. More than 10 million people in the U.S. have osteoarthritis of the knee, and your lifetime risk of developing it is nearly one in two. But there is good news. Experts keep finding more steps that people can take to reduce discomport and to prevent, delay, or slow osteoarthritis.

1) ACHIEVE A HEALTHY WEIGHT
According to one national survey, obese women had nearly four times the risk of getting osteoarthritis of the knee than their lighter peers, obese men had five times the risk. However, you don't need to shed a huge amount of weight to benefit your knees-losing just 10 pounds can significantly reduce your chances of developing the disease.
2) STRENGTHEN YOUR MUSCLES
In a recent University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics study, women with stronger quadriceps, or front thigh muscles, were better protected from knee osteoarthritis than weaker objects. To build up your quads, do low-impact exercises like leg raises, wall sits, and squats.
3) GET MOVING
A lack of joint mobility has been directly linked to knee pain. Why? If you have difficulty bending you knees when you walk or run, you end up placing excess pressure on a small area around the knee cap. Regular tai-chi or yoga sessions have been found to help increase one's range of motion. As an alternative, suggests Dr. David Teuscher, an ortophedic surgeon in Beaumont, Tex "you can add at least 10 minutes of stretching to daily workouts."
4) PICK KNEE-FRIENDLY FOOTWEAR
Clogs and stiff-soled walking shoes may feel comportable, but they can actually cause your knee joints to carry loads up to 15% greater than flip-flops or sneakers with flexible soles do, according to a new study from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. High heels have also been shown to increase the load on knee joints.

Some Thoughts on Retirement

Retirement is the next big adventure in my life. Come July 2011,by virtue of the mandatory law on retirement ,I will be out from the government service . I have forty-four long years as public servant, 10 years of which were spent in the teaching profession. The 34 years in another government office provided me with other work exposures entirely different from my previous job.

If I am to describe these long years ,I can say I am genuinely satisfied with my work . It is with this feeling that I am now having some thoughts on retirement. From my readings I gathered some tips .

1. Use your brain,Keep active,read,write
2. Pursue your hobbies
3. Get involved with charity
4. Learn to do something new (crochet, cross stitch, cooking, new language)
5. Go on local or foreign trips
6. Renew friendships
7. Do volunteer work
8. Spend Time Gardening
9. Get Into Sports
10. Join a Pilgrimage

Well, I think these are enough to fill my days .

CHRISTENING PARTY

EZRA SEBASTIAN CUEVAS, Pilar’s third grandson (apo), was baptized at Saint Joseph Church in Baltimore, Maryland, Saturday, August 28th.
Reception followed the christening, at Dondy and Michelle’s residence. The buffet includes kare kare, (bagoong on the side) imbutido, pancit malabon, fresh lumpia, shanghai lumpia, and rice. The dessert line includes suman saliya, tapioca, fresh fruits, bibingka, chocolate cake, palitaw and peche peche. The grand occasion not only allowed us to meet Larp’s mom (forgive my shabby memory, cannot remember all their names) plus her siblings, a grand total of seven (7). What a great family!
But did I mention the abundance of scrumptious food? I lost count of my trip back to the buffet, after the second time. But after the consumption of hundreds of calories, one of Pilar’s sister initiated line dancing throughout the afternoon. How long does it take to burn xxx number of calories by shaking your booties? I will not get into that, for my own safety. But it was a great balance between burning calories by dancing, and the food consumed before the aerobics! Isn’t life grand?
Annie and I left around 4:30 PM with big smiles and appreciation to Pilar and family for having us. Anyone who has driven a vehicle on a sunny afternoon with a full stomach can relate to this. It was fun and challenging (to stay awake) to say the least. A great time was had by all! Thanks, Larps! And big hugs to the latest addition, Ezra Sebastian Cuevas.
